Together with the entire Staten Island theatre community, SIST mourns the loss of Ellen Mitchell, a true local icon whose energy lit up our stages and ignited our board of directors for decades. Her tenacious fortitude, and unquenchable sense of humor, was essential for carrying the company through both times of growth and tough organizational transitions. These qualities of perseverance from the former chairperson remain embedded in the company’s DNA today. A quintessential storyteller, Ellen directed several plays for us, including The Weir, The Heidi Chronicles, and the Sisters Rosensweig. Memorable performances included those in Dancing at Lughnasa, Plaza Suite, And The World Goes Round, Sweeney Todd, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, and The Nerd. Whether on or off stage, Ellen told the truth. She shared her own truth and was willing to give herself to all. We will always remember that generosity of self that reached out and affected audiences whenever she performed. Ellen let that same spirit shine on all those lucky enough to have known her laughter. Below are photos from a recent SIST Roast and production photos from the 80s and 90s.
